I am getting fed up of people just saying they want acess to my tree on Tribal Pages and not saying who or which family they are interested in. When I ask they just don't reply am I being unreasonable or should I just start to ignore requests if they don't say who they are interested in .
If I wasn't bothered about all and sundry I wouldn't make it so you have to have an access code
Latest one added underneath oh yes and in caps too
Rant over

if they can't be bothered or polite enough to reply then easy to ignore. Makes you wonder why they want to know.

It's the same on some of the forums. You try and help but the person never comes back to say thank you or let you know if you helped them....mind you it is a minority.

As for answering in Caps...don't they know that's shouting...very rude

So I think I must be old now

Glad I am not on my own.
what also crossed my mind was professional researchers, don't mind helping anyone and have done and will carry on doing but not going to help someone who then charges someone else know what I mean. Have spent a lot of money on things not giving them to someone to charge someone else that happened to a friend of mine once. I told her get your tree made private she has now and is more warey of people than I am
Well have sent a nice polite reply asking who they are inerested in and pointing out people don't use caps was very nice about it didn't say don't shout at me lol They may be new to internet if so they are excused
Yes have seen it happen on forums too think they must lose their manners when they go on inernet.
Oh another thing that happens they want to see your tree but never offer you theirs.
Thanks anyway Jane will see what happens.

Well got a reply apolgised for the caps said she hadn't noticed. But she wanted Meadors said she had noticed lots in my tree (lots of Meadows not one Meador she must have been tired ) From what she put they were all in USA too so I have no chance of helping her our lot seemed to have stayed put. Still it was nice to get a reply and some one that is really interested in FH. She said she is admin for 4 sites on myfamily.com think she means she has 4 trees on there. I haven't used that site anyone know about it. Is it any good.

Just had a quick look at that site and it says that each family group costs $29.95 per year, and only one person pays per family group.

So I would say that she must be the person who is responsible for 4 family groups within the site.  I think that makes sense.

I am a member of Tribal pages and I am wondering if you have chosen the High level of Privacy?  (there are 4 levels)
Mine is a locked site, and can only be seen by an invitation from me.
However, if you look on the home page under 'connections' it will list other members who have a connection to your tree with matching names, birth and death dates.  It shows you the details of the connections. If you want you can contact the other person, so I assume the people who have contacted you actually have a connection, unless your site is open to the general public to see, which is not advisable.
I'm finding this difficult to explain, so hope you understand.
Mine includes my husbands tree under the one fee as it all connects with mine.

Hi mother my tree is locked to only by invitation.
Think they put a name in and just ask if one comes up. But they can't see my tree so that is why I am getting these emails. But they don't say any name as to who they are interested in just say can I have your code. (hello NO not just like that that is why it is locked
Anyway this one said she was sorry she looking for Meaors and must have misread it.
I understand what you mean. I am no good at explaining either you did better than I would have.
Thats me too just one tree had thought after I had started should have done one for dereks side and one for mine but it turned out there are so many connections i made the right descision in the first place.

I'm starting to feel that way Germaine, maybe it's because I've just reached pension age! When I started on Ancestry I was happy to share all my info, but now I've started to feel really peeved when people copy my info carelessly and make mistakes, when I've spent money getting BMD documents etc. I did feel it would encourage relations to contact me, and I have found two families of cousins I didn't know existed, but they probably would have made contact even if I'd had a private tree. So many people seem to thing it's their right just to take the info without a please or thank you. I think I'll go private, too.

Exactly Franh I am more than willing to share but when they copy stuff off other trees and it is completely wrong. Yes msut be our age
One family in particular has the wrong info  has been copied from one to another there are about 10 of them now all wrong. I wrote to one or two but gave up in the end they either ignore you or choose to ignore your advise. This one I spent a fortune on certs in Australia and I know!!! I am right. If they looked properly at what they have they would see it doesn't make sense.
That is the trouble put something on the net and it is open to anyone that is why it is best to make private then if someone gets intouch you know they are serious.

It dismays me the way family history is turning out now that it does not cost anything to share information with others.

Those of us who have had an interest in family history pre-internet may remember how everyone shared information with everyone else. This sharing of information in those days often involved costly photocopying fees and high postage paid more often than not by the person who was sharing their information.
Even simply things like purchasing a certificate was more expensive and more time consuming than today in relative terms, in addition every time a certificate or document was taken to be photocopied there was a risk it would be damaged..

These days sharing information is free yet more and more people seem to be proud they refuse access to their trees.
They mention having spent money compiling their records but forget the enjoyment they gained in the quest and success.
They also don't seem to realise that sharing does not devalue their records.

I sometimes wonder if the likes of William Phillimore Watts Stiff (Phillimores Marriage Transcripts) and the vicars and others he co-opted  would have bothered if he had know how some people feel today about sharing.

It makes no difference if a person who one helps does not reciprocate or even say thanks, he/she may in turn help another, who may in their turn help others and eventually someone unconnected may help you.
That is how family history has always worked but by withdrawing from sharing the first links in the chain never get forged.

As we have gained from the past we owe the future a debt which we pay by sharing today.
Cheers
Guy

Hello Guy

Thanks for sharing your comments with us.

My experience with family history has been that people want to share their
details with you.  I have had people send me copies of their various certificates which has saved me quite considerable expense.  And, I share mine with people who are researching the same lines.

But, like it or not, people do have their own opinions and, like you, have the right to express them.

Hope all's well with you,

Regards

Dotty
