Thanks for these pictures Jane.  Your "Where is it" of the Atkinson made me wonder how the work was progressing.  Let's hope it's not all show but a really useful centre.  Will the stuff that went to Crosby be returned?

Sadly not Barbara. There are 4 fiche readers and the boxes of birth, marriage & death indexes. There are a few old street directories on the shelf - maby 10, there are copies of the books Andrew & Matthew compiled of newspaper articles during WW1. There is one film reader and hopefully we shall get some of the old newspapers back in the next few weeks.

I shall keep you informed

At the minute it all looks nice but there doesn't appear to be a huge amount of books. I think some might still be in boxes. Today I was in there with my Grand daughter who wanted a book with some information about voting history...almost impossible to find much. In fact it is reference books which seem in short supply. Those I could see looked fairly new too so it would appear a lot of the old books have vanished. I know some would have been out of date but others were good general guides

And as for the web site...it doesn't even mention the new library is open!

Sorry for the rant. Maybe given time all will be okay

Local history...although most is still and will remain at Crosby Library (The local history Unit for Sefton) some has returned to Southport

We have ALL the BMD indexes

We have AlLL the old street directories -

1857/64/69/76/81/82/86/87/90/92/93/94/96/99
1900/02/04/08/10/12/14/20/24/27/30/31/33/39/51/60/61/70

We have the WW1 books that Matthew & Andrew compiled

And...we will be getting the Southport Visiter back  Just have to wait patiently for a cabinet to be delived to store the films which at the minute are in boxes. There is only ONE film reader so I think it wil be a case of having to book.

I shall try and remember to take a photo of the little corner they have allocated for us when I'm next in

Crosby also have BMD's, street directories & copies of ALL old Southport newspapers.

Thanks for the update Jane.
It sounds promising - I'll look forward to seeing your picture of "the corner".

today I went to a talk at the Atkinson...William Atkinson was the title but it wasn't really what i expected. Quite interesting but not enough info really. This was followed by a tour round...first we were shown what will be the Egyptology room. This is where the Goodison collection (well some of it) will be on display. I wasn't sure why we were getting it but having heard more about the collection must say I am looking forward to seeing more on display when it opens in October.

The other 2 rooms that will be the museum won't open until January 2015 though but everything is being sorted etc

We were also shown the 2 theatres and even stood on stage and in the dressing rooms. It all looks good and it does sound like there will be so much more going on than there used to be. All it needs now is for people to support things and go and attend live acts etc, see the arts centre displays and generally have a look round

That sounded very interesting Admin

I wonder why I didn't get an email from Stephen Whittle as that was why he asked for our email addresses so we could be informed of activities at the library.  That would bring people in...

This talk is part of the Object of the Month talks. It wasn't Steve Whittle...a man called Alan O'Callaghan who's job title I forget. It is also on tonight at 6.30.

I think with more research a talk about William Atkinson would be very interesting which this lacked. Although Alan told us a little about him I wanted more

Dotty you should pick up a booklet in the Atkinson which lists what on until August

Is the Visiter archive in the Atkinson yet?
I'm coming to Southport in a couple of weeks time and would love to
find it without having to go to Crosby.

So happy that the Forum is up and running again - I've missed it so much.

Yes, Barbara, the Visiter archive is back in Southport.

It is in the negative form...so you read white writing on a black background but if you want a copy you can choose to print it in reverse...so white with black writing.

Hope that makes sense.

So glad so many people are returning to the forum.
