Hello

Just wondering if anyone has the marriage certificate/entry for Hugh Gregson and Jane Cropper for 1878 at St John, Crossens?

I'm trying to clarify which families both Hugh and Jane belong to and ideally the marriage record will give their fathers' names.

Here's hoping

Hello Jody,

My suggestion is to send a PM to Chuck telling her about this query.

Her husband is a Gregson and may know the answer.

Good hunting.

The Brian Griffith website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ance...T&db=bgriffiths&id=I25870 has the parents of Jane as Richard Cropper, b 1827 Banks and Mary Rimmer, b 1833 Crossens.

Hugh's parents are not shown. However I do have a record of them as Hugh Gregson, b 1815 Crossens and Martha Spencer, b 1818 but unfortunately no record of the source & validity of that information.

There aren't too many Jane Croppers around. I don't have an actual  certificate or register, but her age & pob are consistent through the censuses.

As for Hugh I have no idea - I have one the right age, s/o Hugh Gregson (c1827) & Ann Wareing (c1823), who is unaccounted for after 1871.

Bob, I don't have the Hugh Gregson you mention, or indeed the Martha Spencer, which is strange as Spencer is one of my "specialist subjects"   [EDIT just noticed that they were from Tarleton, at least when they married - might explain it]

Thank you for the replies.

This is what I've come up with so far....

There are 3 Hugh Gregson's born between 1855 and 1858:
- Jun 1855
- Jun 1856
- Dec 1856 all Ormskirk RD

In 1861, there are 3 Hugh Gregson's:
- born 1857 son of Hugh (master wheelwright) & Ann
- born 1857 son of Hugh (agricultural labourer) & Martha
- born 1856 son of (Hugh) & Mary

There is one death between 1861 and 1871 - in Dec 1864, Ormskirk RD.

In 1871, there are 2 Hugh Gregson's:
- born 1856 son of Hugh & Ann
- born 1856 nephew of James Wareing

There are no deaths (of the right age) between 1871 and 1881.

There are 2 Hug Gregson marriages between 1871 and 1881;
- 1871 to Ann Sharpe at St Stephen, North Meols
- 1878 to Jane Cropper at St John, North Meols

There is only 1 Hugh Gregson in 1881 - Hugh and wife Jane.

Based on this, I had tentatively put Jane as the daughter of Richard and Mary (seems to be the only Jane of the right age) and Hugh as the son of Hugh and Ann.

However, to be sure, the marriage entry will give the occupation and names of the fathers.

Thank you for your reply.

However, the Hugh I am looking for was a couple of generations earlier, he was born about 1857 whilst Jane Cropper was born about 1859 - both in Crossens.

Hugh and Jane had at least 9 children between 1879 and 1894 and according to the 1911 census, they had been married for 33 years and had 13 children of whom 4 had died.

What a shame...the result could have been so different.

One of these days all will be revealed.
