William was buried in St Stephen's graveyard alongside his first wife Margaret (nee Gregson, 1872-1919). Records indicate that the burials were in Plot E26b. There used to be a small headstone on the grave which is no longer in the churchyard. Does anybody have any old photographs of the headstone?

I took some photos of St Stephens a few years ago, sadly William & Margaret's gravestone eluded me if it was still there then.  I think I do have Margaret's mum's gravestone, with her second husband Harry Ball.

What a shame but thanks for the reply Steve.

I will let Dave G know as he may know something as he is our Gregson expert.

Thank you both for your interest and help.

I will look for the headstone for Margaret's mother next time I visit the churchyard - if it's still there. In the meantime would it be possible to have a copy of the photograph?

I have photographs of all the headstones in St Stephen's with the surname Johnson on them - taken in summer 2014. There are 36 in total and I have managed to link all but 4 to our Johnson family tree.

If ever anyone researching Johnsons from Banks is interested in someone who is buried there, but lives too far away to visit, I am more than happy to share the photographs.

Here's Isabella with her second husband Harry Ball in St John's Crossens.  So far I have Harry as the son of Harry & Alice Ball (nee Peet), my 2nd Cousin 5 times removed and 1st Cousin 5 times removed respectively,  I don't have much on Isabella's family yet, but she seems to be the daughter of John Johnson & Elizabeth Watkinson.

Great. Thanks very much. I'll look into what I know about her. Probably not much as I haven't really looked at Margaret Gregson So far. Technically We are not related to her as she was my wife's grandfather's first wife. After she died William remarried and his second wife is my wife's grandmother.

William Johnson (1872-1949) and Margaret Gregson (1872-1919)
Unfortunately, having done a bit of research we do not think this is the gravestone of our Margaretís mother and stepfather. We think Williamís first wife Margaret Gregson is the daughter of Isabella (Elizabeth) Watkinson (born c.1848 in Tarleton) and Thomas Gregson (c.1841). Thomas died in 1876 and in 1887 Isabella marries Harry Ball (born c. 1858 in Hesketh Bank). They are in the 1891 Census living in Church Lane, Banks and their birthplaces of Hesketh Bank and Tarleton are consistent. William and Margaret married in 1894 at St Stephenís, Banks and we have a copy of their marriage certificate. Margaret gives her address as Church Lane. There is no father recorded for Margaret which may be because her father Thomas was deceased and her mother had remarried by this time. Perhaps she wasnít sure if she should name her real father (Thomas) who died when she was 4, or her stepfather (Harry), so left it undeclared? As Isabella and Thomas married in 1866, before Margaret was born, it is likely that Thomas was her biological father. Harry and Isabella are also in the 1901 and 1911 Censuses living in Ralphís Wifeís Lane, Banks and the birthplaces are consistent. In the 1911 Census the marriage is recorded as 23 completed years which matches the 1887 date we have for the marriage. Isabella is recorded as 62 and Harry as 53 years old which are consistent with the birth dates we have of c. 1848 and 1858 respectively. These are not consistent with the dates/ages on the St Johnís, Crossens gravestone. Isabella would have to have been born in c.1842 and Harry c. 1845. The 1911 Census lists another Harry Ball and wife Isabella, living at Bonny Barn Farm, Banks. Their recorded ages of 69 and 66 match those on the gravestone and we think it is this family buried at S Johnís rather than our relatives.

That's quite some research you've done there, Peter.

I'll take a look at it and send it round to some other members who may
share your family.
