In Oct quarter 1869, Mary Blundell married Robert Gildert/Gildart at St John's Church, Crossens. They had four known children:
- Sarah, born 1871
- Richard Sutton, born 1874
- William, born 1880
- Thomas, born 1884

Mary died in the March quarter 1888 and Robert remarried.

The only suitable Mary Blundell I have found in the 1861 census is living in Crossens .with her grandparents - Richard Sutton and Cicely which would mean that Mary's mother was a Sutton and would explain why one of her children had the middle name Sutton.

There is a marriage of a Thomas Blundell to a Margaret Sutton in 1852 at St John's, Crossens and a number of possible deaths for Thomas before 1861 when Margaret Blundell, nee Sutton married Thomas Tomlinson also at St John's.

Richard and Cicely also had a daughter - Margaret who was born in 1828 in Crossens who, according to the Park database, married Thomas Tomlinson.

Does anyone recognise this family? Does it make sense? Can anyone confirm the marriage information from St John's?

I don't want to send for the marriage certificates as they are only very distantly linked to me - but I hate having loose ends and if I am right, I can tie up a number of connections.

Regards Jo

Hi Jo
I do have this family, but from the Gildert side (Robert Gildert's grandmother was also a Blundell). I had not connected the Mary Blundell who married him with the granddaughter of Richard & Cicely Sutton, but it makes sense.

There is a Thomas Blundell b1820, Crossens (s/o John Blundell & Mary Jump). I can't say for sure if he is the one who married Margaret Sutton, but conveniently a Thomas Blundell of Crossens was buried at St Cuthbert's in 1853, aged 33! It would also make Mary named after Thomas's mother.

As you say the certificates would prove it, but they are also not really that close to me.

Have you noticed that Robert Gildert's second wife was previously married to an Edward Blundell? Be nice if we could tie them all together!

Hi Brian

Quick message for now as I have to go out - if Mary is the daughter of Thomas Blundell and Margaret Sutton, then she is the 5th cousin of the Edward Blundell who married Nancy Cookson according to my software's calculations. Common ancestors being John Sutton and Ann Jump.

I'll investigate more when I get back

Hi Brian

I've been having another look at this and have found this:

Tomlinson Margaret. 20 January. Administration of the Personal Estate of Margaret Tomlinson, late of Crossens Southport in the County of Lancaster Widow who died 2 January 1885 at Crossens was granted at Liverpool to Mary Gildert (Wife of Robert GIldert) of Crossens the Daughter and on of the Next of Kin.
Personal Estate 182 9s 9d  (equivalent to 10929.18 in 2005 Accordng to the National Archives converter)

I think this clinches it as far as Mary Blundell being the daughter of Margaret Sutton - just need to see if I can pin down Thomas Blundell.

Jo

Thanks Jody, I've not been lucky searching the probate records...up to now!

I remain in a state of expectation that one day they will reveal something
to me.  My rellies obviously had not two pennies to rub together...
