I have been asked this a lot recently. Maybe you have found a copy of a will. Where did you look? How did you obtain a copy?

Following the advice in an article you did for the magazine I went to the Probate Office in Liverpool (within the Court building); paid my £5 and went back an hour later and there it was! I did have to know the full name and the year of death to get it though!

You can search the Probate Calendars (from 1858) held at Record Offices. They vary as to when they go up to, but usually the 1960's.

If there is a will you need to send to York (with some exceptions - the LRO does hold some copies of wills proved in Lancaster (1858-1938) and Liverpool (1858-1940)). Alternatively you can visit your nearest probate registry - Liverpool for us.

The cost when sending to York is £5 and this includes a search fee (even if you have the date and place of probate). If you send the fee and the search reveals no will, then the money is gone, but if there is a will and/or grant of Probate, they are included in the fee. Additional copies cost extra.

Re - sending off to York for copy wills:

Don't be too disheartened if you dont hear from them for weeks on end. I have waited a couple of months before copies finally arrived! They go to a lot of trouble - those old wills do not fit easily onto modern paper sizes, even A3. The last one I got had been copied twice just to accommodate a few margin notes on the left side. And all for just £5

They seem to be snowed under at the moment.

I phoned last week to see what the progress was on the will I requested in October (cheque dated 18th October). The recorded message I got was that they were processing requests received on 26th September.

You can find some pre (think it is 1850 ) wills for Lancashire here. I found a couple you can get copies from LRO. Think they were £5.
Email them for a quote if you can't get there.
They will email you a form.
