Hi,

I have my tree on Genes but no hard copy on my computer. Can anyone recommend a reliable database on which to store my information and print off trees etc. I have Windows Xp on my computer and enough hard disc to accommodate a geocom.

Many thanks

Lyn Mullen

Do you mean a genealogy programme? I use Family tree Maker as do a lot of people I know.

There are some that are free to download though - PAF from the LDS is one.

As long as people remember whichever one they use needs backing up. If your PC dies you lose everything.

Thanks I'll give Family Tree Maker a go and remember to back it up.

you can do what I do. I have the progamme on my computer but the file is kept on a USB stick that way I can take it any where and plug it into the lds library computers. but if my computer crashes all my genealogy is safe. after all 25years of research needs the best protection.

That is a good idea Unsworth. I use those sticks for transferring things from laptop to PC and vice versa.

Well Lynn I can testify that what Jane says it true...yesterday my PC crashed and I have lost everything...

I was, am, devastated. My first job is to get one of those stick things that Unsworth and Jane mentioned.

Dotty, despondent and devastated

Sad

I am sorry to hear about your problem Dotty, I would have been devastated to lose my research.
My late sister started the family history and she used Family Tree Maker. I am not terribly computer literate, and don't always trust the things, so I have taken the simple way out.
I have one or two floppy disks for each surname, and I just record all my findings on Word and save it on the disks. I can't print a family tree, but to me that is not a problem. I remember when my sister printed one out, there was sheet after sheet, and many of the pages were blank! It was worse than a jigsaw to put together.
I'm hoping to get a laptop next year, and I'll have to change from using disks (my nephew has tried to explain, but it all goes over the top of my head), but I think I may stick to Word.
I have several Lever Arch Files, and within each File I have the individual families, starting in the case of the Rimmers with my Great Grandfather, his wife and their children. I record my findings in narrative form and include census, parish register entries, maps, postcards etc. and I just work my way backwards.
I also have the large files for all the certificates, and a small A-Z book to act as a database for family members and marriage witnesses etc. I'm also building up a file to list the records I still want to find.
Probably all sounds very long winded, but it works for me.
Degan

Degan its a shame you didn't get to the society meeting lastmonth. It was all about drawing trees - various ways ere shown including Family Tree Maker, spreadsheets, on a word document and of course without a computer.

I also have arch lever files with paper copies of all my research.

Well the angels have smiled on me today because I have found a backup of my PAF files from last week. I was bringing it to work for when we had big gaps between clinics but I couldn't use it because we didn't have the program on the office PC. I am soooo.... pleased and thankful.

Also, I've found the set of four photos of my g.uncle's family. That was on the work PC as well and I was sure I deleted them after sending them as an email attachment. Oh joy...

My son is getting me a stick thingy today so it will be belt and braces for me from now on.

I had a tip today to prevent damage from power surges...

You can buy plugs that prevent power surges. At worst the fuse blows!

17:55 and all's well...

Dotty....delirious wav

I have it all on paper too, you can't rely on computers being around for years to come.
Think back to the 78's (for young people - records)

We have one of those plug thingy's Dotty.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Dotty. Computers are great when they're working, but the all end up going wrong sooner or later.

I can wait for the info on Jenny's husband, I've still got a fair few Johnson's, Ball's and Abram's to sort out. If I get really bored I can always try following some Wright's or Rimmer's!

I use CD-R's to backup my family tree files, cheap compact discs that can only be written on, not erased. They were only £17.99 for a hundred at Woolies and my backup file is only about 10MB (at the minute) so they should last me a fair while.

It also means that if I really cock it up I can go back to any number of earlier versions of my tree, all saved under the date on which I made the backup.

I use Legacy version 6 for my tree now, although I did start on PAF (Personal Ancestry File). Legacy has a lot more "bangs and whistles" and I've really come to rely on it now with my tree the size it is now (22600 as of this morning). All I need to do is enter myself as the starting person and the program will work out how everyone else is related on my tree is related to me, and attach the closest relationship to that person's record, just above their name. Very handy when you've got 11th and 12th cousins floating around.

I can't remember what Ancestry cost now, but I'm sure it was under $20 (American), not much these days with exchange rates as they are.

I'd better get back to my Johnson's anyway, before I forget which one I was looking at!
