John Abram
To recap, there are at least six John Abram’s born between 1802 and 1806 and sorting them out is difficult. Ida’s task has been to establish which John is ancestor to Edward Abram (b 1854) who appears on the 61 census as a son of John & Ann Abram. Edward is a direct ancestor to Ida. From the NMFHS ONE’s we have:-
1. John b 8/7/04 the base born son of Alice Abram, who died 14/4/37.
2. John b 21/9/06 the son of Thomas and Margaret Wright and who died 29/10/13
3. John b 4/1/05 the son of Richard and Alice Wignall
4. John b 19/4/07 the son of Lawrence and Ellen Wright
5. John b 23/5/02 the son of John and Ellin Wignall and who died 1/3/05
6. John b 14/9/06 also the son of John and Ellin Wignall
Each John has been identified as #1 to #6.
John 1. Recorded as base born to Alice Abram on 8 July 1804. A burial 14th April 1837 does not record the parents but gives an age of 32. No other Alice Abram is in the frame. The burial at 32 years matches the birth date (well almost). Thus John #1 is eliminated.
John 2. A baptism 21 September 1806 as son of Thomas & Margaret establishes the parents and the burial in 29 Oct 1813, although no parents are noted, at the age of 7 confirms this family. Thus John 2 can be eliminated.
John 3. A baptism on 4 Jan 1805 gives parents as Richard and Alice. Census data for 41, 51 and 61 shows this John in a family group which all match pretty well except that Jane and Isabel seem to have changed ages, perhaps the enumerator wasn’t listening. It would tie some loose ends up if we could find a marriage between John and Alice, so far no joy. However this John 3 can be eliminated.

John 4. John 4 was baptised son of Lawrence & Ellen 19 Apr 1807. In the 41 census he is living at home in the Lawrence & Ellen group. In 51 he appears as a Labourer with the Balls. In 61 he appears as head of a family with Ann (wife) plus Benjamin 1835, Lawrence 1851, Edward 1854, Ann 1857 and Ellen 1860.

At first glance this group should at least in part have been in the 51 census as head, wife and Benjamin. Benjamin and Barnaby as first names have; even recently, been interchangeable in Ida’s family and assuming they were in 1851 we find a Barnaby base born to an Ann Johnson 27 March 1836. The likelihood therefore is that John and Ann married around the date of their son Lawrence’s birth in 1851. The Civil Registration Index gives both John Abram and Ann Johnson on page 473 of volume XXI of marriages in the July/August/September quarter for 1851.
A marriage cert was obtained confirming the marriage on 19th July 1851. As importantly John’s father is given as Lawrence thus matching the Father in the baptism records.
Almost certainly this John Abram is the one we’ve been tracing. Ida’s tree now goes back from Edward (1854) through John and on to Lawrence (1778) and Ellen Wright.
John 5. A baptism on 23 May 1802 gives parents as John & Ellen. A burial on 1 Mar 1805 also gives parents as John & Ellen and an age of 3 years. John 5 can be eliminated.
John 6. John 6 is the second John to be born to John & Ellen as the baptism record shows them as parents. This birth is 18 months after the death of their first John (#5 see above). The census data for 41, 51 & 61 all give good matches. In 51 Alice Wright is listed as Mother in Law, Thus Mary (the Wife) is almost certainly a Wright. A marriage record for 19 Oct 1830 gives a John Abram and Mary Wright. This John 6 can be eliminated.
