I checked this address out in some directories today in the library.

Dotty had said she had this address on a marriage certificate for Howard.

Unsworth said she had this address for Rimmers (I think)

Anyway I found -

1920
2 Lytham Road - John Rimmer
4 Lytham Road - William Rimmer

Seacop says she thought William was John's father.

1924/25
The same

1927/28
2 Lytham Road - William Rimmer, painter
4 Lytham Road - John Rimmer, shrimp Potter

It stayed the same until -

1933/34
2 Lytham Road - Mrs Elsie Rimmer
4 - John Rimmer, haulage contr.

So I am guessing Elise was William's wife and he was by now dead.

As for your John Robert and father Joseph Howard Dotty?? Certainly John may have lodged there when he married but I couldn't find his father in any surname listing in the directories. A lot of Howards but no Joseph to fit. That meant I couldn't follow up by looking at the electoral registers because you need an address.

During a quick look at St Cuthbert's records at Preston yesterday I came across the following:

Marriage
John Rimmer (20) 4 Lytham Road, father John Rimmer, Bootmaker
m
Margaret Cropper (20) 12 Lytham Road, father John Cropper (deceased) Joiner

Forgot to write down how John Rimmer (Jnr) occupied his time (when he wasn't courting Margaret that is Embarassed

well here is how 2 lytham rd fits into my tree

my father DONALD RIMMER youngest son of THOMAS RIMMER and DORIS HOUGH. tom's Father was JOHN RIMMER. he married MARY ELLEN JOHNSON. jOHN AND ELLEN had seven children only 3 survived William who married Elsie Roberts. Thomas who married Doris and Ellen who married Henry Ashcroft. when the houses on Lytham rd were built John bought 3 houses, 2,4 and 6 each of the children was supposed to get a house on his death. however william the eldest got all 3 ellen and tom got nothing. this caused a huge feud to erupt between siblings. when william died tom refused to attend the funeral. when tom died nana threw the flowers from ellen and elsie across St cuthberts churchyard. as for the roberts there in later years. one of Henry and Ellen Ashcrofts daughters married a Roberts. they had a daughter Melanie who I went to school with. the less said the better. she married money. and bought one of those new houses in the latter 80's just off knob hall lane.

Well there's an old saying 'your friends you pick but your family you're born with'.

I have a similar experience in my family...it's heart breaking!

With working full time I don't have a lot of time for the 'fun stuff' but I must get on with the Howards and see where 2 Lytham Rd fits in with stuff...

TTFN
