I am thinking of changing from the Free PAF Software (from LDS) to something better. Advice please on what other members are using and what they think.
Should we run a poll to see what users recommend?

| If you have broadband I would recommend Legacy - it's free to download but takes a lot of time, but it is easy to use and prints out great family group sheets.

I agree Bez, but I use the Legacy deluxe version 6. It only costs about £12 (in dollars) to open up all the extra options and it's well worth it.

I use family Tree Maker. I was given it many years ago so it isn't the most up to date version but does what I want.
As for drawing trees - I find doing them n a word document or spreadsheet better. Once you get quite a few people in your programme the tress can be far too big to print.

Legacy version 6.0 is £38.50 on ebay. Where did you source it at £12

Hello Keith, sorry I've only just noticed your post.
$21.99 (American) for download only from Legacy's site. The manual is all on line anyway so I didn't really see the point of ordering manual and CD. Being a man I never read the manuals anyway.
Once you've installed the free version, all you need is a password from Legacy to open up the extra features. As they don't have to send the CD or anything they only charge $21.99. When my computer goes wrong and I have to re-install I just download the free version and put in the password again.
The price on eBay will be for a copy of the program on CD with manual etc. Very pricey if you ask me!

I use Brother's Keeper as my main family history program. It's fast easy to use and doesn't slow down when hundreds of images are added to the database.
I would also recommend Calisto the free calendar program, in fact I would go as far as to say it is indispensable for family historians.
download it from-
http://homepages.tesco.net/%7Ejk.calisto/calisto/index.htm
and never struggle with double dating again.
Cheers

Thanks for this link - it looks excellent and I certainly never realised that Scotland had changed way before us.
I do have a book on the subject, but only for England, so it will be very useful to compare dates with other countries should the occasion arise.

You can't send an email of a page. Except by exporting it and that gets complicated.
Dont buy it. Use the free version on the LDS site. Also buy for next to nothing the add on version PAF 5.2 which lets you develop lota of different reports and trees.

I use Family Historian v3. I like the database display and input screens - never really got used to the programs which use a big card-index like format. It also uses gedcom as its file format, so no exporting needed to upload to Rootsweb or Genesreunited
Guy - thanks for the Calisto link - maybe now I can get my head round those old dual years!!
